Week 32 - Worries and Wonders

The discernment for baby names continues. We would really like to take inspiration from the saints in naming our children. How cool would it be to read a story about a superhero and think "hey, that's my name?" How much cooler to know that the superhero was a real life person that did amazing things as a child of God? We hope that these amazing role models will inspire our children, through a variety of ways. In the meantime, we are actively searching through saint stories and feast days, hunting for just the right ones. We are cutting it pretty close to the end! It is a much more difficult challenge than we anticipated - who knew we had so many opinions?

This week, the reality of our timeline is becoming increasingly apparent. We are just 6-10 weeks away from meeting our little one. This is extremely exciting but also very scary. In the midst of a pandemic, we don't have the option of attending a child-birth class or touring the hospital where we will labor and deliver. At the beginning of this pregnancy, Kiersten shared some initial worries about labor and delivery and was encouraged to consider a doula. We did our research and discovered that these "birth coaches" are phenomenal aids for parents to have during labor. These incredible women bring knowledge and expertise on labor and delivery into a personal relationship with clients - ensuring that even if the medical staff on hand is shared with other patients, we would have a dedicated partner in the process. We would get the chance to meet with her in advance, truly get to know her and share our vision for birth. Now, we know that extra safety pre-cautions have been put in place at the hospital, to protect patients and staff alike, but they definitely introduce extra worries and concerns. Laboring mothers are only allowed one support person, and unfortunately, doulas are considered support people, not medical professionals. So, its either doula....or Ben. Neither of us can imagine Ben not being there for the labor and delivery. So, unfortunately this opportunity is not truly available to us. We are both working hard this week to learn as much as we can, to be as prepared as we can. We know from working through other mental health challenges that all we need is a well packed toolbox and a willingness to work together through anything. The book "Made for This," by Mary Haseltine has been a tremendously empowering resource in these efforts; she truly inspires us to remember that God designed women, from the beginning of time, to bring children into this world. So, when we can surrender to Him, we are able to become profoundly connected to His plan for creation.

As the week came to a close, we celebrated Ben's first fathers' day. It was a wonderful occasion surrounded by family, including several touching moments where his fatherhood was warmly recognized. It was truly meaningful to see others recognize this gift and to receive their love.

Week 34 - Home is where Family is

This week, we eagerly prepared for a celebration. With great excitement, we welcomed our parents and sibling to our home to celebrate: * Independence Day * Kiersten's MBA Graduation * 1 Year Wedding Anniversary * The completed decoration of our home! In the final days leading up to this special occasion, we put the finishing touches on our home, becoming experts at measuring and hanging wall art - something our house has been desperately missing for way too long! Believe it or not, we signed the mortgage on this little place in November of 2018. So, the walls have been in desperate need of some personality. In much thanks to the generosity of our family and friends, we were able to fill it with several meaningful items, as well as a few selections of our own. It brought us great pride to show off our finished space to our immediate family. We have taken the time during quarantine to truly knock items off our project list and make this little house our own.

Week 19 - A Whole New World

This week brought change no one could have truly anticipated. We'll start with the photo, above. We have spent the past few months training for a 5k event that was scheduled to take place on Saturday. Due to the coronavirus precautions, the event was cancelled. This was disappointing for our group, since we had all worked so hard to accomplish this goal. So, we decided to gather together (in a group of 10 or less!) to complete the challenge, all the same. Some of us accidentally put in more than 5k, but we all had a great time on a brisk Michigan March morning. We enjoyed fellowship and food before retreating to our homes for the weekend. The hotels have been knocked out at the knees. We were on track for a record breaking March, but all of that has come to a screeching halt as businesses and individuals heed government precautions to avoid travel and gathering in groups. Last Thursday, we held an emergency meeting to brainstorm cost saving measures. Hourly associates had ...

Week 12 - The 1st Good Glimpse

This week, baby is as big as a plum! Ben has eagerly downloaded several different apps to keep up to date on baby's growth as well as the expected changes to Kiersten's body. Unfortunately, morning sickness has been a constant, with vomiting and dry heaving becoming an every day trend. Everywhere we look indicates that most women have experienced relief from these symptoms by now. That is unfortunately not the case for this pregnancy. We are constantly reminded that "every pregnancy is different" in addition to the reassurance that "this will pass soon, and then you'll be glowing!" At this point, we are beginning to expect Kiersten's body to have literal light beams coming from her fingers and hair. We were able to visit the doctor, again and get some more pictures! We can finally see our little one in a form we recognize. It was so special to hear their heartbeat and see them wriggle around on the ultrasound screen. The doctor indicated tha...
